Beni Altmüller. ‘Luce Nel Bosco’ June/July 2020

Beni Altmüller (born May 26, 1952) is an Austrian artist. He works with various media and materials in applied and free fields of art.

He was a guest of ours as Artist in Residence in June/July 2020. During his stay at the Ciabot in Roddino, he created the sculpture ‘Luce nel Bosco’, the work stands on the wayside on the street Localita Bocciarda.

The project’s idea provoked different reactions; in any case, the sculpture provided a lot of talking material in Roddino.

Karin Bucher and Thomas Karren were our guests in the autumn, and we thank you for their impressions, for the text, and the photos.

As first-time travellers to the Piedmont we examine our map and finally find Roddino and Ciabot in the midst of vineyards. Behind the church we descend a lane as to our left a huge wooden ball appears. Signifying to us the end of a long journey.

„Luce nel bosco“ , in english „Light in the Woods“ is a piece of art by Beni Altmüller, created in  June 2020. The sculpture is made of log cut branches of various local trees. Skillfully twined, an orb around a central nest it reaches out for the sun from dawn till dusk. Like fallen from the sky, heavily grounded, contemplating, confronting all storms.

In this manmade landscape the rearranged branches talk of a monument to the diversity and vitality of nature. Talk of the mortality of all existence. Reach out its senors in every direction to capture the energy of the universe. Maybe a reminder to mankind: grab the sky, bring it down to earth and live paradise.

We found paradise in Ciabot. Riding the bicycle, eating like Gods, drawing and playing some music we quickly recovered from an intense episode of time. We managed to see our past from a breezy distance, digest and condense, put to rest and make plans.
